I put together a video featuring my porcelain collection…just in time for the NYIGF!
I’ve got the last kiln firing away for the New York International Gift Fair while I’m sorting and packing the rest of my collection for the show.
It’s the final week of prep for the New York International Gift Fair. I’m nervous and excited to bring my new line of work up to the show for the first time. Either way…better get this kiln loaded so the work doesn’t melt the bubble wrap on Wednesday for shipping!
January is typically a slower month when I usually recover from the busy fall and holiday seasons. That isn’t the case this year because I’m in the studio trying to get ready for my first trip to the New York International Gift Fair. They have a fairly new “Handmade” section that I’ll be showing my work in. I’m getting all of the details ready for the show which includes much more than just making pots. I have a new linesheet for my wholesale line of work, I have some new signage for the booth and a brand new press kit. It’s easy to forget how much work goes into running a studio. Making pottery is the easy part!
I have a draft 2011 recap post started but it’s getting a little late to put that post up. I’ll probably just turn that post into a photo recap when I find the time.
Here’s step 1, 2 & 3 for nice clean line on the Essential Mug.
And that’s the last of the new work for the year. A bisque gets loaded tomorrow and I’ll be all set for the first firing of the year to be the first week of January.
I was surprised and thrilled to learn that Apartment Therapy included my work in their Best of 2011 Sources for the Handmade Home article yesterday! It is a pretty great way to end a very busy and exciting year.
There’s not too much downtime because an even busier year begins right away with a show at the Michelson Museum in Marshall, TX and the New York International Gift Fair Handmade Designer/Maker 2012 Market.

This is a must see video of Ice Cube discussing Eames. On another note, I’d like to be an architect when I grow up.

I’m back in the studio today after a fantastic family trip to NY. The kids played with their cousins and the adults had a great time as well. We had a couple trips to NYC from my folks house which added to the fun. My wife and I checked out “Book of Mormon” which was as hilarious as it was irreverent. We all headed back into the city to see “The Nutcracker” on Saturday with the grandparents. The kids were loved the ballet (and the giant tree) but a quote in the Playbill from George Balanchine stuck out in my mind, “There are no new steps, only new combinations.” Just as easily applied to working in clay as in dance.
