Artist/Designer Keith Kreeger & Ashley Bailey of Byrd & Blair will be on hand to help you make this holiday season perfect.  Featuring holiday bouquets set in handmade porcelain vases.  This pairing is perfect to spruce up your holiday party.  Bring one along as a hostess gift and stand out among the many bottles of wine.

By George: PopUp ReCap

A stunning venue, ridiculously beautiful flowers, striking porcelain vessels and wonderful people.  The PopUp Shop I hosted with Byrd & Blair at By George was above and beyond amazing.

By George was an absolutely wonderful space to spend Thursday & Friday.  It is an outstanding clothing store with an incredibly curated collection of designer clothing and accessories.  It was a great setting to set up a custom floral & container boutique for the day.  Below are a few photos of the event.  Best of all, it was a truly wonderful crew to spend a couple of days with.  Thanks to Ashley of Byrd & Blair for including my work in her vision and thanks to the entire By George staff for their help. If you can't tell from the abundance of positive adjectives I used...I thoroughly enjoyed this PopUp.  I met some great new clients and connected with existing ones in a new setting.  I'm already looking forward to the next event!

Holiday PopUp at By George

By George PopUp ShopI've worked with my friend Ashley Bailey of Byrd and Blair (formerly The Byrd Collective) on a few projects recently.  I'm happy to be alongside Byrd & Blair again during a Holiday PopUp 11/29 & 11/30 at the By George Flagship Store on Lamar.  Ashley and Carly will be arranging greens, garlands and more to help you decorate for the holidays.  I will have a variety of vases and bottles filled with their beautiful arrangements.  Wonderfully designed vases paired with delightful arrangements makes for an instant upgrade to your homes decor this season.  I love how Byrd and Blair can combine elements that seem so simple and turn them into something special. Spring Arrangement by the Byrd CollectiveBy George is an incredibly curated high-end clothing store and I'm thrilled to be working with them.  They search out the top makers in fashion and their commitment to quality is second to none.  It's going to be a wonderful setting to start of the holiday season. This PopUp is yet another reason I'm so happy to be part of the creative community in Austin....Flowers, porcelain and fashion....sounds kind of beautiful to me!

Handmade and shopping small is a luxury…and it’s worth it

Handmade can be a luxury for everyday.   I’ve been thinking a lot about the value of handmade recently.  The deluge of “Shop Small” emails I’ve received recently only added to the many ways we’re told that we can support local and handmade this holiday season. There were also a couple of blog posts aimed at small businesses got me thinking a little more broadly about this idea.  A tweet by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey got the wheels churning even more,

No business wants to be called "small" (or "big"). Neighborhood businesses may aspire to be global businesses.  Shop locally, think globally.”

I love this studio shotI spend a lot of time in my studio striving to make beautiful objects.  These simple yet beautiful pieces are many of the items that we use everyday in some way.  Perhaps it’s a mug for your morning coffee or a bud vase that sits on your bathroom vanity.  Are these objects in our lives unimportant because we use them every day?  Should those items be cheap because of the mundane tasks they’re used for?  I don’t think so. Personally, I like living with nice things.  One morning it could be the mug, made by a friend, that I choose to start my day with.  Other days, it might be as simple as the pair of shoes I put on that I bought after coveting them for months.  The things we choose to surround ourselves with do matter.  How and why they’re made matter as well.   We can’t always choose to live with something purely because it’s handmade or because it’s local (though I try when possible). Many mornings I stop at Houndstooth Coffee for a macchiato.  During that one stop, after 3-4 sips of that spectacular coffee it’s become a different kind of day.  I use the same beans at home, but that experience is something on a whole other level.  Yes, I’m shopping “small” by drinking my coffee there but that’s not why I find myself there time and again.  I can have coffee anywhere and I can order from a “local and small” coffee house anywhere in Austin.  I’m going to Houndstooth because that cup of coffee is better than just about any cup I’ve ever had.  And every time I’m there, those few minutes become one of the best moments of my day.  This is just one example that shopping “small” isn’t as important as shopping small and well. Red Chelsea BowlSo, if you’re shopping around for a gift this year, please ask yourself...are you buying small out of a sense of obligation?  Do you only feel the need to support an independent store or artist or are you purchasing something beautiful that’s been designed to enhance your everyday living?  My work is truly done when you’re day is better because of what I’ve made.

New Work at Nannie Inez

There is a new store in Austin.  Nannie Inez just opened the doors today and I think you should head over as quickly as possible to see why I'm so excited about it. Austin is a wonderful town and I had heard through multiple friends that I should meet Deeyn who has been busy putting the final touches on her new shop.  The shop's amazing display shelves have been flying across the internet making every design lover in Austin green with envy.  Deeyn has curated an incredible collection to fill those shelves and I love how she describes the shop so directly, Nannie Inez, good living. I'm thrilled to have my newest collection in Deeyn's shop along with the rest of the fabulous work she has on hand.

I hope you'll trust me and head on over to check everything out as soon as you can.  Great shop, great name, great town...Nannie Inez, Welcome to Austin!

Make. Eat. Drink. Recap

Wow...Thanks to all who came out to join us for Make. Eat. Drink. make eat drink Make. Eat. Drink. is an idea that has been percolating for quite some time.  You can check out Matt McGinnis' preview of the event on his great blog What Are You Drinking?  The food scene has just exploded here in Austin in the time that I've been here and it was great to see the collaboration between the different disciplines for the event. I have to say...the evening was a hit.  Many thanks to our hosts Shara and Leigh from Eastside Glass Studios & Boom Gallery.   The only downside is that I was so busy that I didn't take any pictures of the event itself.  Here's how the evening transpired: Guests arrived and quickly spotted the shelf of cups made by Ryan McKerley, Shara Funari, Leigh Taylor Wyatt and me.  We each had about 10-12 cups for their choosing (the cup was included in the ticket price).

Cups by Keith Kreeger, Leigh Wyatt, Shara Funari & Ryan McKerley

After our guests had a cup in hand, they headed to the bar which was custom-made for the event by Petrified Design.  Behind the bar, Adam Bryan was mixing up some of Contigo's famous cocktails (I personally chose the El Pepino and it was delicious...both of them). The room was absolutely beautiful with and blown glass, ceramics, painting, furniture.

Shara & Leigh curated an incredible collection for their new gallery.  There was an amazing dining table made by Brian from Engrain Furniture Designs.   Chef Andrew Francisco of the soon to open Mettle Eastside Bistro served up his delicious Ceviche & tasty Profiteroles.  Of course, all the goodies were served on handmade wares. Guests mingled, talked about the cups they chose and enjoyed the rest of the evening. I loved the way the food, drink and creative communties came together for the event.  Thanks to Ben from Contigo, Bridget Dunlap from Mettle and all of the artists who helped put the evening together.  I know that we'll be seeing some more Make. Eat. Drink. events in the future.  We're already brainstorming the many possibilities.
